We must turn towards the recent reports of violence in Idaho and see the connections – high school football players racially abusing and raping their teammate who has a disability, college football players sexually assaulting a young woman, men targeting and killing a gay man, a young man committing a domestic violence-related homicide, and more.We have a shared responsibility to ask what we must do differently to end domination and violence in our communities.
Talk with your family, neighbors, and community about the worth of every human being, why everyone should be valued and accepted for their authentic selves, and how differences should be celebrated.
Listen to girls and women and people who are gender nonconforming, people of color, people with disabilities, and people who identify as LGBTQ most impacted by domination and violence; listen to their stories of the truth of their histories and lived experiences.
Turn towards those being harmed and interrupt discrimination or abuse.
Implement school-wide anti-bias approaches on gender, race, ability, and sexual orientation and prevention strategies on gender violence – abuse and rape – to make our schools more just, equitable and safe.
Develop meaningful and accountable relationships with communities most impacted by hate and violence to work towards shared power, equity, and compassionate communities.
The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence can help create shared safe spaces, school anti-bias and prevention approaches, and works to catalyze partnerships. Let us know how we can help inspire change.
